Guys,

I am getting my engine completely rebuilt. 670 with 9,000 miles. Want to get another 9,000 miles out of it after the rebuild. I was thinking about doing it myself, but I just don't have any time this year to do it. Bringing it in to Jerry at Irondog this summer. He has great reputation and has been rebuilding motors for years. I am not worried about his workmanship, but he did suggest some aftermarket parts to get the cost down. I would be fine going this route if I know I can get many more thousands of trouble free miles out of it. Here is his response. Does anyone have any experience with these aftermarket parts and do you feel they are up to par with OEM parts? Thanks

Response from Jerry:

Skidoo parts prices are way out of line for pistons, gaskets and connecting rod kits. 670 rod kits from Skidoo sell for $240 each, your crank would need two plus all the bearings and seals and $150 labor. Skidoo used to sell a completely factory rebuilt crankshaft for around $450 but they discontinued them a couple of years ago. We use and have had great results with aftermarket Koyo made in Japan crank bearings and SPI made in Taiwan rod kits. We do use Rotax genuine crank seals as they are superior to any aftermarket seal. A 670 crank totally rebuilt by me with all new parts is around $450. A Skidoo factory gasket set is around $200 for the 670. We use Winderosa or Cometic made in USA Gaskets at around $55 for a set. Skidoo factory pistons are only available in standard bore and .25mm oversize, at $130 per piston. PLUS they come without wrist pins and clips which ad an extra $33 per piston. Again we have had great results with SPI pistons which are virtually identical to the factory ELKO pistons and sell for around $70 each complete with rings, pins and clips. Another $45 or so worth of parts and seals are needed to rebuild the 670 water pump and seal both ends of the crank in the cases. Labor to bore both cylinders and assemble the complete engine is $300.

Using the aftermarket parts I have suggested brings the parts total to $690 which with labor yields a price of $990 for a completely rebuilt engine with no shortcuts.
